Quick answer

Compare local SEO quotes by the work, responsibilities and evidence they include, rather than the monthly total alone. Ask each provider to describe the same locations, services, website and reporting needs. This guide gives US small-business owners a practical comparison worksheet without presenting a made-up market average or an XpertManager price list.

A simple way to approach it

  1. 01

Give each provider the same business brief.

  2. 02

Separate setup work, ongoing work and outside costs.

  3. 03

    Make deliverables and responsibilities concrete.

  4. 04

Keep account ownership and access clear.

  5. 05

Agree how progress and the end of the engagement will be handled.

Start with one brief for every proposal

Write down your real business name, operating locations, services, website, areas served and the kind of inquiry you want. For a local contractor, a useful goal might be more suitable repair requests in the places the team actually covers. For a practice, it might be clearer information and appointment inquiries for the services it provides. These are examples, not promised results.

Include what is already in place: the managing account for the Business Profile, website editing access, existing analytics and any previous SEO work. Record unknowns rather than inventing a baseline. Ask providers to quote against this same brief so differences in scope are visible.

Separate the bill into three parts

First, identify setup or project work: discovery, a manual review, tracking preparation or a defined set of page improvements. Second, list recurring work and its frequency. Third, list costs paid to other providers, such as advertising spend, hosting, software subscriptions or directory services. Do not assume every quote includes all three.

Use a simple comparison: setup amount + agreed recurring payments over the period you are comparing + separately confirmed expenses. Keep currency, tax treatment, billing period and renewal dates explicit. A low starting price can be difficult to compare with a broader proposal when these details are missing. This is a budgeting worksheet, not a recommendation to buy a particular package.

Turn vague tasks into reviewable deliverables

“Website optimization” should name the pages or problems being addressed and who will publish the changes. “Business Profile management” should explain what work is included, who approves sensitive edits and how findings are recorded. “Content” should identify the intended audience, topic, research and review process.

A clear proposal can say: review the existing AC repair page, prepare a revised draft, obtain owner approval and validate its published links. A vague alternative says only “improve online presence.” The first can be reviewed without pretending that publication guarantees rankings. Ask what happens when the agreed work needs more effort than estimated.

Keep business accounts under business control

Record who owns the domain, hosting, website, analytics and Business Profile. Clarify what access is needed for the agreed task and how it will be removed when work ends. Keep passwords out of shared proposal documents.

Google’s hiring guidance recommends asking about methods, communication and measurement, and using read-only Search Console access for an initial audit. It also cautions against ranking guarantees and unexplained changes. Use those questions as a starting point, then specify the practical approval process for your engagement.

Choose a report that helps you make decisions

Ask for a dated record of completed work, observed findings, open questions and next actions. Where measurement exists, distinguish impressions, clicks, contact actions and suitable inquiries. A phone-link click does not prove a connected call; a lead count does not prove booked work.

Agree which countries, devices, pages and time windows will be compared. Reconcile URL changes before treating a decline at an old URL as lost traffic. A useful report explains small samples and reporting delays rather than presenting every movement as a result of the provider’s work.

For local search, Google describes relevance, distance and prominence as important factors. It does not sell an improved local position. A proposal should therefore describe controllable work and its limits, not a guaranteed map location.

Example: compare two quotes without inventing prices

Imagine a single-location US auto repair business receives two proposals. Proposal A includes a profile review and a monthly summary. Proposal B also includes website editing, form checks and two defined service-page drafts. Their totals cannot be judged fairly until the owner establishes whether those extra tasks are needed and who would handle them otherwise.

Make a row for each task. Mark included, excluded or unclear. Record the deliverable, responsible person, approval point and additional charge if any. Send the same unresolved questions to each provider. This is an illustrative comparison, not an account of an XpertManager customer or a claim about typical US pricing.

Clarify what happens when the engagement ends

Before committing, ask for written details on the minimum term, renewal, cancellation notice, outstanding work and asset handover. Identify which recurring third-party charges continue independently. Confirm how account access and documentation will be handed back.

Request clarification of unclear commercial terms from the provider and obtain professional advice when appropriate. This checklist helps organize questions; it does not interpret a contract or replace legal advice. Keep the agreed scope and later changes together in one accessible record.

Use an initial audit to make the conversation concrete

Start with the free Local Growth Audit if you need an initial view of available public business information and website readiness. It can help you raise specific questions before requesting support. It is not a full site crawl, a private Business Profile management tool or a guarantee that every issue is detected.

Ask a local SEO provider which findings are confirmed, which require owner access and which tasks they recommend first. A useful next step is a scoped conversation about the actual business, rather than buying an unnamed bundle because a score looked low.

Good to know

  • Compare the same scope and period, with separate costs clearly listed.
  • Do not treat a task count, score or ranking promise as proof of business results.
  • Keep ownership, approval and handover responsibilities explicit.

Common questions

Questions people ask

What should a local SEO quote include?

Look for a defined scope, locations and pages covered, concrete deliverables, responsibilities, fees, separate costs, reporting and the terms for ending the engagement.

Is the cheapest quote always the best option?

The total alone cannot show fit. Compare the actual work and exclusions against what your business needs and what your own team can handle.

Does paying an SEO provider buy a better map position?

No. Google says businesses cannot request or pay for a better local ranking. Providers can charge for work, but should explain its limits.

Is this XpertManager’s price list?

No. This is a buying checklist. Any XpertManager service scope, fees and responsibilities must be agreed separately in writing.
